Lars von Trier’s multifaceted Antichrist is a breathtaking work of art with outstanding performances by Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe. It is beautiful, fantastical and, occasionally, shockingly violent and explicit.
A central theme in the film is depression, which Von Trier was suffering from during writing and filming. Forever the provocateur, he confronts and shakes us more than any other serious filmmaker. We are in new and dangerous territory here but the rewards are well worth it.
