This impressive low-budget crime drama is set in and around the socially deprived Mohawk reservation which stretches between upstate New York and southern Quebec. The protagonists are two women, one white, the other a Mohawk Indian, who live in shabby house trailers. They are played excellently by Melissa Leo – who was nominated for an Oscar – and Misty Upham.
Written and directed by Courtney Hunt as her debut feature, Frozen River won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2008. It is a grim yet wonderfully executed piece of storytelling in an original setting.
